Research Fellow
Background
Dr Maria Calero Gonzal is a Research Fellow working within the Safer Systems, Cultures and Practices theme of the Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboration (YH PSRC). Her background is in Occupational Psychology and Human and Organisational Factors.
Maria completed her PhD with the Human Factors Research Group in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Her doctorate was supervised by Dr Brendan Ryan and Professor Carl Macrae and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Underpinned by Resilience Engineering and High Reliability Organising perspectives, Maria’s PhD explored safety management in the GB railway system, with the aim of understanding and supporting resilience and adaptability at system, organisational, and individual levels.
Prior to joining the YH PSRC, Maria worked internationally as a safety consultant in the road transport sector. She has also been part of the communications team of the Resilience Engineering Association since 2022.
Research interests
Maria has a particular interest in translating safety and cognitive science research into industry practice. She is especially interested in qualitative methodologies. Her main research interests include safety culture, complex systems, learning systems and cultures, and psychosocial risk.
