Following a review of the second victim literature and a series of studies with managers, pharmacists, doctors and nurses we have identified that negative emotions are commonly experienced by staff following error, but that particular coping responses (reappraisal and approach) facilitate recovery. Support following an error might best be accomplished through team based learning and effective communication with patients. We are currently exploring collaborations with Tom Gallagher and other in the USA to test whether simulation training to improve disclosure to other peers and patients (an idea developed in the US by Tom Gallagher) might serve to promote staff wellbeing following an incident and facilitate effective disclosure. This project is in the early stages of development.
